On Match Day 2025, the University of California, San Francisco Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (UCSF OHNS) welcomed five new members to our residency family:

  • Ana Araujo - Oregon Health Sciences University
  • Lauren Tucker - Columbia Medical School
  • Melissa White - Duke Medical School
  • Sophie Yu - Harvard Medical School
  • Connie Zhou - UCSF

According to the National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®), there were 52,498 applicants registered for the 2025 Main Residency Match with 79.8% of certified applicants matching into PGY-1 positions.

2025 marked the first time in five years that UCSF OHNS conducted in person resident interviews. "While virtual interviews were functional, we found that the in-person format enhances the ability of applicants to learn the culture of our program and interact in a meaningful way with our current residents – their potential colleagues," says Steven Pletcher, MD, UCSF OHNS's residency program director.

Last year, the department partnered with the American Association of Medical Colleges to conduct a survey of Otolaryngology applicants that demonstrated a dramatic preference for in-person interviews. "[Preference signaling] has allowed us to more methodically and holistically evaluate applicants who show a true interest in our program," Dr. Pletcher said.

The residency program at UCSF OHNS is a five-year program in which trainees are exposed to all subspecialty areas within Otolaryngology and presented with the opportunity to work in multiple training environments. Learn more about the program.
