Welcome Dr. Zachary Steinhart
Dr. Zachary Steinhart was born and raised in Toronto, Canada, where he found an interest in biomedical science at an early age. Dr. Steinhart was particularly inspired by his father, a gastroenterologist and clinical scientist, and innovator in therapies for inflammatory bowel disease. He completed his undergraduate studies at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, in Life Sciences.
Dr. Steinhart completed his PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Toronto under the supervision of Dr. Stephane Angers, where he studied Pancreatic Cancer and developed some of the first high-throughput CRISPR tools for functional gene discovery in cancer cells. Keen to enter the immunotherapy field, Dr. Steinhart next joined the Gladstone-UCSF Institute of Genomic Immunology for a Postdoctoral Fellowship under the supervision of Dr. Alex Marson. As a postdoc, he developed and applied tools for gene discoveries in human T cells to enhance immunotherapies. Dr. Steinhart received multiple awards during his postdoctoral fellowship, highlighted by the Parker Bridge Fellowship Award to support his transition to an independent investigator.
Dr. Steinhart is thrilled to be staying in the world-class UCSF research community and join the outstanding Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery faculty, where he aims to study the genomics of Tumor Infiltrating Lymphocytes in Head and Neck Cancer and develop novel immunotherapies.
Outside of work Dr. Steinhart enjoys spending time in the great outdoors – backpacking, skiing, rock climbing – traveling, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.
Please be sure to say hello when you see him.
