UCSF OHNS is pleased to announce the appointment of José G. Gurrola II, MD as the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at UCSF.
José has been the Chair of the department’s Diversity Committee for the past several years and so he has local experience in this role.
Originally from Stockton, California, José is a graduate of The University of Notre Dame where he had a double major in Pre-Professional Studies Science and Theology. He attended Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine where he also spent two years in a partnership program at the NIH-NIDCD. José accomplished his residency training at the University of Iowa where he participated in a T-32 research program. His fellowship was in Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery at Georgia Regents University. His first academic position was at University of Virginia but José was recruited to UCSF in 2017. At UCSF, José enrolled in the Teaching Scholars Program and also was selected as a Watson Scholar.
Clinically, José is an anterior skull base surgeon who partners closely with our neurosurgery colleagues and with Ivan El-Sayed, MD to concentrate on minimally invasive and high technology approaches for difficult to reach sinonasal and brain tumors. He is also part of our rhinology team and is driving clinical research in olfaction using a custom made olfactometer and other clinical methods to study disorders of cranial nerve one. José has professional service to numerous organizations including the North American Skull Base Society, the American Rhinologic Society, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery where he served on the Task Force for New Materials. Additionally, he has professional service to numerous journals including IFAR, AJAR, and Laryngoscope.
José has been committed to activities in SNMA and LMSA. He has served the UCSF Academic Senate, including a term as Vice Chair of the Committee on Education Policy, and has contributed to the Orthopedic Trauma Institute Junior Academy. He has volunteered to mentor rising second year medical students through the Academic Leadership Academy Summer Program. On a national level, José has participated on the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
Please join us in congratulating José as he begins his new role. José will continue to chair our Diversity Committee which helps to vet applications to our residency program and he will remain on our Education Committee and Clinical Competency Committee. In addition, José will interface with the DEI community in the School of Medicine, the Health System, and the Campus to bring best practices to the department. He will have a role in developing retreats and other educational activities and will be a part of recruitment of students, residents, faculty, and staff.
