Degree: MD
P. Daniel Knott, MD, is a Professor in the Facial Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery Division, and he is the Director of Facial Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery in Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Knott received his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego in La Jolla. He completed a one-year General Surgery internship from the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, and a five-year OHNS residency from the same institution, followed by a Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship from the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center.

Dr. Knott particularly specializes in artificial tissue and tissue engineering applications. He has extensive experience on the full spectrum of facial anesthetic operations and treatments, with great focus of the reconstruction of traumatic, malignant, and congenital defects of the head and neck. He also has experience in creating solutions for the two common issues that affect the face over time - treating the descent of the soft tissues and facial soft tissue atrophy.

Dr. Knott’s clinical research has focused on the novel applications, morbidities, and recipient potential of the antero-lateral thigh free flap. He has been using free flap in many innovative ways including, pharyngeal, nasal, scalp, and mid-facial reconstruction. Dr. Knott continues his research efforts in the basic science sphere, which focuses on the broad concept of cartilage bioengineering. Along with cross-sectional colleagues, Dr. Knott has patented a technique of cross-linking collagen and hyaluronic acid using a tyramine-based chemical process. The cross-linking can be performed across a wide spectrum of concentrations, yielding a variety of biomaterials of differing strengths, shear resistances, and biomechanical properties.

Dr. Knott has authored over 30 peer-reviewed papers and serves as a peer reviewer on topics related to facial plastic and reconstructive surgery for multiple national journals including, Head and Neck Surgery, JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery, Laryngoscope, the International Journal of Dermatology, and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Knott has authored six book chapters on facial aesthetic surgery and published a book on the aesthetic use of botox.
