On April 21, 2025, the 129th Boston Marathon brought together runners from around the world to tackle one of the most iconic and challenging World Marathon Majors. Among the thousands crossing the finish line were three exceptional members of the UCSF Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery: Dr. Steven D. Pletcher, Dr. Jacquelyn Callander, and Dr. Taylor Erickson. Their impressive performances not only highlight their athletic dedication but also reflect the same resilience and commitment they bring to their medical careers.
Remarkable Finishes on a Historic Day
The Boston Marathon is renowned for its demanding course and competitive field. This year’s race featured ideal weather conditions, and our UCSF runners rose to the occasion with outstanding times:
- Jacquelyn Callander (Bib 14217): Finished in 3:12:30, averaging a 7:21/mile pace.
- Taylor Erickson (Bib 15289): Finished in 3:15:22, averaging a 7:28/mile pace.
- Steven D. Pletcher (Bib 14465): Finished in 3:21:47, averaging a 7:42/mile pace.
These times are remarkable on their own, but even more so considering the intense demands of their professional lives.
Balancing Marathon Training with Residency and Leadership
Training for a marathon requires months of consistent preparation, including long runs, speed work, and recovery—all demanding significant time and energy. For physicians in residency or leadership roles, balancing this training with clinical duties, research, and teaching is a formidable challenge. The ability of Drs. Callander and Erickson to maintain rigorous marathon training schedules alongside their demanding rotations speaks volumes about their discipline and time management. Dr. Pletcher, as a rhinologist, professor, and residency program director, exemplifies lifelong dedication to both medicine and personal wellness by completing the race with a strong finish.

Spotlight on Our UCSF Runners
Jacquelyn Callander, MD
Chief resident and soon-to-be rhinology fellow at Stanford, Dr. Callander’s 3:12:30 finish is a testament to her focus and endurance. Her clinical interests include chronic rhinosinusitis and olfactory dysfunction, and she has been a leader in advancing patient care and surgical innovation. Her marathon accomplishment is a fitting capstone to a remarkable residency.
Taylor Erickson, MD
A PGY-4 resident with a passion for rhinology and medical education, Dr. Erickson finished just minutes behind Dr. Callander. Recently appointed to the ACGME Otolaryngology Residency Review Committee, she is shaping the future of residency training nationwide. Her marathon performance reflects the same perseverance and drive she brings to her clinical and educational work.
Steven D. Pletcher, MD
As a rhinologist, professor, and residency program director, Dr. Pletcher is a pillar of UCSF Otolaryngology. His 3:21:47 finish highlights his commitment to leading by example—balancing the demands of clinical practice, education, and personal fitness with grace and determination. This was Dr. Pletcher’s second Boston marathon, having previously completed the course in the rainy, cold 2018 event.
Congratulations to all three for their outstanding achievement and for representing UCSF Otolaryngology with such distinction at the 129th Boston Marathon!
