On Match Day 2023, the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF OHNS) was excited to welcome 5 new members to our residency family:

  • Maimuna Ahmad, University of Massachusetts
  • Patrick Barba, University of California, San Diego
  • Rex Lee, University of California, San Francisco
  • Arushi Gulati, University of California, San Francisco
  • Eric Kim, University of California, San Francisco

"We're thrilled to have the opportunity to work with such outstanding young physicians," says Steven Pletcher, MD, UCSF OHNS residency program director.

According to the National Resident Matching Program® (NRMP®), the 2023 Main Residency Match was the largest in the organization's 70-year history with 42,952 applicants and 40,375 available positions.

"We're honored to be able to celebrate with the next generation of physicians as they transition to residency and are grateful of the trust Match participants continue to put in us year after year," says NRMP President and CEO Donna L. Lamb, DHSc, MBA, BSN, on the NRMP website.

Otolaryngology saw a small decrease in the number of applicants this year but continues to be one of the more competitive residency programs. This year, Dr. Pletcher and members of the Otolaryngology Program Director's Organization Council led the continued use of residency preference signaling to improve the efficiency of interview offers and provides a more equitable way for applicants to stand out to their favorite programs.

The residency program at UCSF OHNS is a five-year program in which trainees are exposed to all subspecialty areas within Otolaryngology and presented with the opportunity to work in multiple training environments. Learn more about the program.
