Our Free Head & Neck Cancer Screening event on April 15 was a success! The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF OHNS) provided screenings, support, and educational material to nearly two dozen people.
Honoring Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Month, the UCSF OHNS team offered educational materials to those being screened. The OHNS team explained the risk factors of these types of cancers and ways to recognize the symptoms early on to attendees.
The free screening was comprehensive, covering various areas of concern. It included examinations of the skin, ears, nose, oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx, salivary glands, thyroid glands, and neck, ensuring a thorough assessment of the attendees' health.
Many department members, including RNs, APPs, and administrators, contributed to the successful event.
Additional preventative tips were offered and included the following:
- Cease tobacco usage
- Moderate alcohol use
- Ask your primary caregiver about HPV vaccination
- Perform monthly self-examinations
- Visit your primary caregiver or dentist for an oral, head and neck exam regularly
