
The weekend of June 20-22, 2025, was full of events at the University of California, San Francisco Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (UCSF OHNS).
UCSF OHNS welcomed Jeffrey M. Bumpous, M.D., F.A.C.S., Executive Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean, University of Louisville School of Medicine, to give the 2025 Francis A. Sooy, M.D. Endowed Lectureship. Dr. Bumpous's educational objectives, which included understanding complex biological pathways impacted by depression, were covered in his morning lecture, Head and Neck Cancer Survival Through Biological and Behavioral Pathways. The afternoon session, Otolaryngology-HNS Training and Assessment: What will the future hold?, offered a condensed history of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery education in the United States and the interface with self-regulatory assessment processes.

Chief Resident presentation included Shayan Fakurnejad, MD, Management of High Grade Parotid Malignancies; Michael Lindeborg, MD, Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma with Laryngeal Invasion; and Danielle Gillard, MD, Management of Unknown Primary HPV+ Oropharyngeal Carcinoma.
The weekend continued with the Resident Research Symposium, judged by Katherine Wai, MD, Jeffrey Bumpous, Jolie Chang, MD, and Mary Jue Xu, MD.

Graduation wrapped up the weekend as we said goodbye to our Chief Residents — Drs. Jacquelyn Callander, Danielle Gillard, Michael Lindeborg, Spenser Souza and Shayan Fakurnejad — and welcomed incoming chiefs.
