The UCSF Medical Center has begun a new recognition program called the "Great Catch for Patient Safety Program." The program will recognize individuals at UCSF who prevent or mitigate harm as reflected in an incident report. The program is sponsored by the Patient Safety Department and the Patient Safety Committee to recognize efforts to report safety concerns, promote transparency of events and follow-up, and foster patient safety awareness and a culture of safety. This month, Dr. Ruwan Kiringoda, a chief resident in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, was the first to be recognized in this program for his efforts at preventing harm to a patient as well as for quick and accurate reporting of the incident. This reporting led to a review of patient safety protocol. It is conscientious care like this that is one of the hallmarks of our outstanding residency program, now entering its 60th year of accreditation.
