Data from UCSF Study Could Assist in Presurgical Evaluation and Counseling Processes for Human Papilloma Virus-Associated Oropharynx Squamous Cell Carcinoma Patients

Recently, a multidisciplinary team of investigators from the UC-San Francisco Departments of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS), Radiology and Biomedical Imaging, and Pathology and Laboratory Medicine sought to answer the question: "Among patients with HPV+OPSCC, how common are the post-surgical histopathologic features that suggest the use of adjuvant radiotherapy or adjuvant chemoradiotherapy after surgery?"

As part of a task force within the Otolaryngology Program Director's Organization Council, UCSF OHNS's Steven Pletcher, MD adopted and implemented a system which allows applicants to signal residency programs of particular interest and provides programs with valuable information when selecting candidates to interview. The findings of this first application of signaling in medicine were recently published in Academic Medicine.

Impressive Showing by UCSF OHNS Presenters at 2021 National Meetings

At recent national academy meetings, faculty members and residents from UCSF OHNS gave lectures, participated in panels and moderated discussions. A total of 21 members of UCSF OHNS were invited to share their expertise at the 2021 meetings of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Rhinologic Society.
