About Me 

Matthew S. Russell, MD, is an Associate Professor of General Otolaryngology in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco. He received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine, and he completed both his general surgery internship and Otolaryngology residency at UCSF.

Dr. Russell’s primary clinical responsibility is to provide general Otolaryngology to the UCSF Parnassus Heights inpatient facility. He enjoys all aspects of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery, and has a focus in Acute Care and Inpatient Otolaryngology where he sees many patients with airway and sinus problems. Dr. Russell enjoys working as part of the larger multidisciplinary UCSF inpatient group to care for people with multiple medical problems in a team-based, patient-centered approach.

Beyond his clinical duties, Dr. Russell is actively engaged in Patient Safety and Quality Improvement initiatives at the departmental and medical center levels. He is particularly interested in creating a health care system that is structured to provide safe and efficient medical and surgical care. As an educator, Dr. Russell provides hands-on and didactic education to Otolaryngology residents and medical students, and both learns from and teaches nurses, respiratory therapists, and speech language pathologists about issues pertaining to Otolaryngology.

Dr. Russell is grateful to be able to work in such a rich and vibrant community of dedicated professionals while providing clinical care to individuals during times of profound illness.
