CHESA Global Surgery and Health Equity Fellowship in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery

The UCSF Center for Health Equity in Surgery and Anesthesia (CHESA) has developed a multidisciplinary, 1-2 year fellowship for health professionals committed to developing a career in global health equity in the perioperative space. The fellowship tailors and supports individual career interests and includes health equity research support, global health curriculum, global partnerships in low- and middle- income countries and additional clinical training.

The UCSF Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery CHESA Fellowship offers a one year, funded program for a board-eligible or board-certified Otolaryngologist (ACGME accredited Otolaryngology residency graduate). Fellows spend at least six months at UCSF participating in clinical duties within the Pediatric Otolaryngology division of the Benioff Children’s Hospitals, and six or more months at the Children’s Surgical Centre in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. This is a non-ACGME fellowship pathway.

Fellowship Aims

-To provide a yearlong program for an Otolaryngology graduate interested in gaining career experience and faculty mentorship in global health equity research, capacity building, education delivery and clinical/surgical care in low-resourced surgical settings.

-To participate in and support ongoing surgical care delivery, education and health equity projects at a partner hospital in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

-To provide additional clinical training in Otolaryngology subspecialities at UCSF including call and hospitalist coverage for the pediatric otolaryngology service at two tertiary pediatric hospitals. Opportunities to rotate with other otolaryngology subspecialties outside of pediatrics can be tailored based on interest and are in addition to pediatric otolaryngology duties.

Fellowship Structure

-Fellows spend at least 6 months of their year at UCSF, participating in project development, global health equity curriculum and clinical/surgical responsibilities.

-Fellows spend the remainder of the year in Phnom Penh, Cambodia (at least 6 months) as a clinical instructor fellow at the Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), participating in clinical/surgical care delivery, surgical education and health equity projects in partnership with Otolaryngology trainees and attending surgeons in Cambodia and UCSF.

-OHNS CHESA Fellows participate in regular online seminars with other CHESA Fellows and global health mentors across multidisciplinary surgical and anesthesia specialties throughout the year

-Fellows with external funding or existing partnerships in the global health space are also welcome to apply and may participate in health equity projects at other sites abroad (currently only the Children’s Surgical Centre, Cambodia rotation provides a living expense stipend while abroad).
