Voice and Swallowing Center

The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Voice and Swallowing Center is a multidisciplinary center designed to serve patients with voice and swallowing disorders. The mission of the Center is to provide state-of-the-art care for patients, develop technology for the diagnosis and management of patients with disorders of the upper airway, participate in research for our improvement in the understanding of voice and swallowing disorders and develop educational programs for residents and fellows interested in the diagnosis and management of patients with voice and swallowing disorders.

The UCSF Voice and Swallowing Center is staffed by otolaryngologists (laryngologists), speech-language pathologists, voice therapists, swallowing specialists, singing teachers, neurologists and other medical consultants in related fields, and basic scientists (researchers).

The UCSF Voice and Swallowing Center was started in 2004 as a Division of the UCSF Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery. It provides medical and surgical services for people with voice problems, disorders of the larynx (voice box), disorders of speech and disorders of swallowing. Specialized clinical services are available.

These include services for patients with:

  1. Professional voice demands 

  2. Vocal misuse, abuse and overuse 

  3. Recurrent laryngitis 

  4. Spasmodic dysphonia 

  5. Vocal cord paralysis 

  6. The aging voice 

  7. Cancer of the vocal cord 

  8. Scarred vocal cords 

  9. Benign vocal cord disorders, such as nodules, cysts, granulomas, webs, papillomas, and polyps

  10. Neurological speech difficulties related to demyelinating and basal ganglia disorders such as ALS, PLS, Pseudobulbar palsy and Parkinson’s disease

  11. Swallowing disorders
